What We Treat

Trauma and PTSD Treatment New Jersey

At Nova Mental Health, we provide trauma and PTSD treatment for individuals in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, and surrounding areas who are experiencing intrusive memories, emotional distress, hypervigilance, or ongoing psychological effects from past traumatic events. Trauma-related conditions can disrupt sleep, concentration, relationships, and daily functioning, often long after the original event has passed.

Trauma work is part of the treatment plan in our Partial Care program.

Our clinical team offers evidence-based outpatient care focused on reducing symptoms, improving emotional regulation, and supporting individuals in regaining stability in daily life.

Trauma and PTSD

What Are Trauma and PTSD Disorders?

Trauma-related disorders occur when the nervous system continues to respond to a past distressing or life-threatening experience as if it is still happening. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is one of the most recognized conditions in this category.

These conditions may develop after experiences such as:

  • Physical or emotional abuse
  • Accidents or serious injury
  • Natural disasters
  • Military combat
  • Sudden loss or witnessing violence

PTSD can affect mood, behavior, cognition, and physical stress responses in ways that interfere with normal functioning.

  • Avoiding places, people, or situations that remind them of past events
  • Withdrawing from relationships or social interaction

Symptoms of Trauma and PTSD

PTSD symptoms involve both psychological and physical responses that can persist over time.

Common symptoms include:

  • Unwanted memories of past experiences that appear suddenly
  • Nightmares or distressing dreams related to past events
  • Feeling unsafe or on edge even in neutral situations
  • Difficulty staying present or focused in the moment
  • A persistent internal sense of threat or unease

What Causes Trauma Responses

Trauma responses develop based on how the brain and body process distressing experiences. Contributing factors may include:

  • Severity and duration of the traumatic event
  • Previous trauma exposure
  • Genetic or biological stress sensitivity
  • Lack of support following the event
  • Co-occurring anxiety or depression
  • Ongoing environmental stress

Each individual responds differently, which is why treatment is highly individualized.

Who This Treatment Is For

PTSD treatment may be appropriate if:

  • Symptoms or reactions related to past experiences have not improved over time
  • Daily functioning is consistently affected and difficult to manage alone
  • Previous coping strategies have not led to lasting improvement
  • Stress or emotional responses feel difficult to manage in everyday situations
  • Additional support is needed to restore stability and improve quality of life

Why Early Treatment Matters

When trauma symptoms remain untreated, the nervous system can stay in a prolonged state of stress activation. Over time, this may affect sleep, mood regulation, concentration, and physical health.

Early intervention can help:

  • Reduce symptom intensity
  • Improve emotional regulation
  • Limit avoidance behaviors
  • Support healthier daily functioning
  • Prevent long-term worsening patterns

How We Treat Trauma and PTSD

Our approach is based on evidence-based and trauma-informed methods designed to support both emotional and physiological healing.

Treatment options may include:

  • Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Somatic and body-based trauma therapies
  • Mindfulness and grounding techniques
  • Medication support when clinically appropriate
  • Virtual and in-person therapy sessions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if what I experienced counts as trauma?
Many people assume trauma only applies to extreme events, but responses vary widely. What matters clinically is how your mind and body are reacting now, not just the nature of the event itself.

Can symptoms show up even if the event happened a long time ago?
Yes. Trauma responses can remain dormant for years and surface later during stress, major life changes, or reminders of the original experience.

What makes trauma treatment different from general therapy?
Trauma-focused care uses specialized approaches that consider how traumatic experiences affect the nervous system, stress response, and memory processing, rather than focusing only on thoughts or mood.
