Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions our admissions team is asked most often. If yours is not here, call us at (551) 733-2282 — there is no cost and no obligation.

Do I need a referral to start treatment at Nova Mental Health?

No referral is needed. You can call admissions directly at (551) 733-2282 and we will walk you through what happens next. An appointment is not required to reach us, and most people start with a short phone conversation before scheduling an assessment at our Fair Lawn office.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes — we work with most major insurance plans. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan, so we verify your benefits before you begin and explain exactly what is covered. You can start that at any time on our insurance verification page, or call (551) 733-2282 and we will do it with you. There is no cost and no obligation for the benefits check.

What if I do not have insurance?

We offer self-pay options. What that looks like depends on the level of care you need, so the clearest next step is a short call with admissions at (551) 733-2282. We will talk through which program fits and what it would cost before you commit to anything.

What are your hours? Do you have evening appointments?

We are open Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Partial Care runs during the day, and our Evening IOP is built for adults in Bergen County who work or study — sessions run in the evening so treatment does not cost you your job or your classes. Our admissions line is answered outside program hours, including weekends.

Is there a free consultation?

Yes. You can speak with our admissions team at no cost and with no obligation. There is no time limit on that call — some run a few minutes, some much longer. It is a chance to ask questions and work out whether outpatient mental health treatment in Fair Lawn is the right fit.

What levels of care do you offer?

Nova Mental Health offers Partial Care, Intensive Outpatient (IOP), Evening IOP and Outpatient treatment for adults. Adult Partial Care is structured daytime treatment five days a week; IOP runs about three hours a day. Care includes individual, group and family therapy, with CBT and DBT at the core.

Do I have to be in crisis to get help?

No. Many adults come to us because weekly therapy stopped being enough, not because something went wrong. If you are managing anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, bipolar disorder or a mood disorder and want more structure than an hour a week, that is what outpatient treatment is for.

Are sessions in person or online?

Both. We offer in-person treatment at our Fair Lawn office and online options for adults across Bergen and Passaic County. Admissions can talk through which format fits your schedule better.

What conditions do you treat?

We treat adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, mood disorders, personality disorders including borderline personality disorder, and ADHD. Therapies include CBT, DBT, and individual, group and family therapy. You can see the full list on our what we treat page.
